FAQ

Q:

Will my daughter cheer for her school’s team.  Can I find out how many spots are open for a team.

A:

CFSA Cheer forms squads based on the school attendance zone your child lives in as determined by CFISD and first come - first placed basis. Therefore, the first 16 cheerleaders that register from a single school attendance zone would be placed on a team together. From any additional cheerleaders would either form a second squad from that school attendance zone, if enough additional cheerleaders register, or would be combined with other cheerleaders from nearby school attendance zones to form a squad.

Since squads are not formed until after registration closes per CFSA cheer rules and pending address verification, it is CFSA policy to not release the number of registrants by school during registration.


Q:

What are the Squad sizes. Why is there a maximum number of cheerleaders. Where did the minimum and maximum number of cheerleaders come from.

A:

Cheer squads will be formed with a minimum of 6 girls and a maximum of 16.  The squad sizes will be strictly adhered to.  The size of the squads (6 to 16 cheerleaders) was created with a balance of maximizing the experience for all participants across the CFSA membership and the manageability and safety of the cheerleaders. 

The numbers were created with input from the CFSA cheer committee and past/present cheer coaches.  These numbers reflect the state and national divisions in place with most cheerleading organizations and allows for more equity among squad sizes.  These numbers are generally accepted as appropriate for novice / volunteer coaches.  The squad size guidelines were voted on and approved by the current cheer committee and the general membership of CFSA.          


Q:

How much are the registration fees for Cheerleading. What does Registration include. Are there any additional cost.

A:

Cheerleading registration cost is $225.00 in May, $235 in June, $245 in July and $260 in late registration.

This amount includes uniform (Shell & Skirt), bow, bloomers, pom-poms, fields, officials and cheer off.  All other accessories are the responsibility of the cheerleader’s parent.

The additional cost  is determined per squad. Examples may include buying turtle necks or jackets to keep warm in the winter, hair bows or socks; the team must all match. Or the materials to make buckets to both carry items and use during games.


Q:

I am interested in volunteering to coach a cheer squad this year and would like to know what process I need to follow to pursue this.

 I coached last year; do I automatically get the squad this year.

A:

You will need to turn in a coach’s application via email to the Cheer Commissioner. The committee will then review the applications and returning coaches will be looked at first and evaluated by last years performance. Coaches are announced after team formations, which is usually one week after registration closes. The Cheer committee ONLY selects the Head Coach. The Head Coach will select their assistant coaches.

No, and in the rare instance where a returning coach from the previous season has had infractions that are not within the core values and standards of CFSA then they will be ineligible for the future season(s). 

 Example of such type of infraction would be harassment of parents/Players, bullying other coaches and staff and not following CFSA policies on coaching.  


Q:

Can my child play up or down from one division to another.

A:

Yes, a child may play up or down one age year if space is available on the squad.  For example, a 7 year old, would play up as an 8 year old and stay in Freshman, or an 8 year old may play up one year as a 9 year old and play Sophomore.


Q:

How does my child get measured for their Cheer Uniform. Does CFSA provide alterations if needed.

A:

During online registration you will have to mark the size uniform your child needs. You will fill out the size for your daughter’s Shell, Skirt, and Bloomers. There will be a diagram listed on the cheer page of the sizes so that you will know before registration what measurements are needed and how to measure. We will also be holding a fittings day for anyone to confirm their size. There will be three fittings the through the month of July, please check the Cheerleading Page of the CFSA website for more information when it gets closer.  

No. CFSA will not provide alterations. We are buying Standard size uniforms and if alterations are needed they will be the family’s responsibility.


Q:

Does my daughter need cheerleading or tumbling experience.

A:

No. Cy-Fair Sports Association Cheerleading is open to everyone. With or with out experience. We are a introduction league and the cheerleaders will be taught cheers and a halftime routine (dance) by their coaches and/or assistant coaches.           


Q:

We reside in a school district adjoining CFISD. Can my child play CFSA Cheerleading.

A:

Yes. At registration you will need to register through the CFISD school nearest your residence. Your daughter will be placed on the nearest squad to your residence based on availability.


Q:

Is it OK to wait until the last day of registration or late registration.

A:

Yes, however it is NOT recommended if you want your child to have the best chance of playing with students from their school. Cheer squads are formed after football teams have been created.  Once the football teams are in place, as many cheer squads as possible are created to provide a fun and full football/cheer experience for as many participants as possible.  Cheerleaders are assigned to teams on a first come, first served basis based on the school they attend in conjunction with the football teams that have been created.  Since the team maximum is 16, then if 17 or more kids register for a team, number 17 and higher will have to play for another team. Of course, if a sufficient number of players register through a school so that 2 or more teams may be formed. Once teams are formed and uniforms have been ordered, there is no moving of cheerleaders. Cheerleaders who register late are placed on the closest team of need. Cheerleader and football players are guaranteed to be placed on a squad / team.  There is not guarantee it will be on their home school’s team.

The caveat to this policy is if no more Cheerleaders sign up for a squad and the squad size would be 17 completely then the committee will vote to keep all 17 Cheerleaders together instead of randomly taking one girl from the squad and placing them on the next closet team. This is in an effort to keep all girls from the same elementary school together. 


Q:

How do I get more involved in the program.

A:

Q:

How many nights a week are there practices and/or games.

A:

The CFSA Cheer Rules dictate the total allowable activities a team may participate in during a given week. An activity is inclusive of games, practices, etc. Prior to the beginning of school, teams are allowed to have four activities per week, once school begins teams are allowed to have three activities per week. During the week of Cheer Off four events are allowed.


Q:

Does CFSA Provide Refunds. Who is eligible for a refund.  When and how do we get a refund if needed. Why can we not request a refund after team formation.

A:

No, Once Team Formation has taken place and the Player has been assigned to a squad they may not ask for a refund based on the team that they are placed on.

Q:  What does it mean to fill out a sibling request form?
A:  The sibling request will guarantee that siblings that are in the same division will be on the same teams. If both are girls than they will both be on the same cheer squad. If one is a football player then the football player will be placed on a football team first and then the cheerleader will be placed on that corresponding cheer squad to honor the sibling request. This in no way guarantees you the Mascot. 
Q:  Can I dispute the results of Cheer Off once they have been announced?
A:  No, all results read at Cheer Off are final and will be upheld as how they were presented at Cheer Off. Coaches may not dispute due to score card information or music disturbances. All Judges, DJs and vendors used are third party and have no affiliation with CFSA .
Q:  What are Spirit pins?
A: Spirit pins are a award your cheerleader can earn at games for preforming at top quality with high spirit, loud cheering, sharp moves and great sportsmanship. The pin will be awarded to cheerleaders by the cheer committee member monitoring the game that day. At a minimum will be at least one pin per game monitored, with a possibility of more being able to be awarded. Committee will be at majority of games with a goal to be at all of the games. Girls can receive multiple pins after game 5 in an effort to have all cheerleaders have a fair chance to  win the award.
Q: What does Varsity and JV Locking mean?
 A:   In an effort to increase varsity growth and increase customer satisfaction we will offer the opportunity to cheerleaders returning for JV & Varsity to lock with their last year’s team mates. In the event there are more than 16 girls the cheer commissioner will contacted the cheerleaders to see if there is a group with in wishing to from a second team. If no group with in wishes to form a second team with in the grouping the first 16 that requested will lock to each other. During sign up they returning cheerleaders will have an option to select their code CFSA returning 1 or if they choose not to lock they simply register for the unassigned pool. This locking will not guarantee a coach, a mascot, or that they would cheer for boys they go to school with. This locking will simply guarantee that the girls would be able to continue cheering with each other. This locking will be eligible for all girls signing up for JV (5)& Varsity (6, 7, and 8).
